Prep Report: Baker makes state cross country
The Ida Baker girls’ and boys’ teams conquered the next stage on the road to the Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City.
The Bulldogs qualified for next Saturday’s FHSAA Cross Country Finals by finishing third and fourth, respectively, in Friday’s Region 3- 3A meet at Charlotte Sports Park.
Senior Darlene Hanlon finished seventh overall with a time of 19:39.54 to lead the Bulldogs. Freshman Jessica Polendo placed 17th and sophomore Leandra Munson 27th. Senior Amanda Kane (38) and freshman Allison West (42) contributed to the effort.
Senior Jesse Betts finished 11th and senior Zachery Stackhouse placed 15th to lead Baker’s boys. The team included sophomore Alan Wise (30) and senior Dustin Greco (36).
Cape High senior Blake Behr also qualified for the state meet by finishing eighth. The Seahawks finished 12th in the team standings.
The top six teams and top 15 individuals qualified for the state meet.
North Fort Myers senior Wally Rosario qualified with a 12th-place time in the girls’ meet. Fort Myers’ runners Sarah Spann and Katie Russo finished 1-2.

Boys Soccer
Oasis 3, Seacrest 2: Oasis goalkeeper Jessy Lyons made the Sharks’ three first-half goals hold up through the second half in a win over Naples Seacrest.
Oscar Trujillo tallied two goals with Joy Giammarusto adding the other for the Sharks. Alex Trujillo assisted on two of the scores.
Oasis (1-1) is idle until December.
Update
Wuerffel Trophy: USF senior safety Nate Allen is one of 74 nominees for the Wuerffel Trophy, presented to the Division I-A player who “best combines exemplary community service with academic and athletic achievement.”
Named for former Florida quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, the award is in its fifth season. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow won the award last season.
Allen, a 2006 Cape Coral High graduate, is one of eight Big East players nominated.
Other state nominees include Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder, Florida kicker Jonathan Phillips, and Florida International quarterback Paul McCall.
