Baker dominates SFM 9-0

2 min read

The Ida Baker girls’ soccer team made the most of their homefield advantage Thursday night, overpowering South Fort Myers 9-0 in a District 4A-11 matchup.

Senior Christine Giles scored four goals with one assist to lead the Bulldogs. Freshman Monique Elliott contributed three goals with one assist while sophomores Payton Van Horn and Emily Gibson added one goal apiece.

The offensive confidence-builder, coming in their first home game of the season, was a welcome sight for Bulldogs coach Dave Trepkowski.

“We needed a night like this,” Trepkowski said. “We spread it out a bit, spread the ball around and everybody played.”

Baker’s dominance is evident in one stat: goalkeeper Alli Dunning made just two saves over 40 minutes to record the shutout.

Van Horn got the first goal just 3:30 into the game, converting a ball that was deflected by South’s keeper during a Baker corner kick sequence. Three minutes later, Giles dribbled 40 yards up the middle of the field to make it 2-0.

In the first substitution exchange, Elliott came in and added back-to-back goals, one on a crossing pass from Cynthia Paredes and tapped in a ball batted down by the keeper in front of the net.

Giles padded the lead with two bullet strikes in the span of 1:30 to make it 6-0 midway in the first half.

“We are looking to improve every game,” said Trepkowski. “South (3-2, 0-2) is a good team. We are not satisfied, the girls themselves aren’t satisfied.”

The Bulldogs (4-0, 3-0 district) visit Estero Tuesday.
