Prep Report: Seahawks notch 1st win
The Cape Coral Seahawks held a significant edge in possession time in the first half, and cashed in with five goals.
They continued to press in the second half Monday, adding three more to their total in an 8-0 season-opening victory over Island Coast at Dave Warkentin Field.
“That’s what we were looking to do,” Seahawks coach David Torres said. “Hold the ball and score when we had the chance.”
Sophomore Caio Amaral and senior Guillermo Duque each scored two goals. Kevin Lopera, Kevin Hurley, Gaston Sola and Juan Cano had one goal apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Villamil stopped three shots.
The Seahawks (1-0) visit Port Charlotte Tuesday night. Island Coast (0-1) hosts Fort Myers also Tuesday night.
First Baptist 2, Oasis 1: It was a day of firsts for the Oasis Sharks – first varsity game, first varsity goal and first varsity loss.
Joe Giammarusto scored the Sharks’ first goal at close range off a long pass from Oscar Trujillo, establishing a 1-0 lead.
First Baptist tallied the tying goal in the second half and converted a penalty kick midway through the period for the game-winner.
Oasis hosts Naples Seacrest at 4 p.m. Friday at Jim Jeffers Park.
Girls Soccer
Ida Baker 4, Fort Myers 2: Sophomore Jordan Goffar scored two goals to lead Baker past host Fort Myers.
Goffar put the Bulldogs in the lead in the 27th minute and their 2-0 halftime lead held up. Freshman Monique Elliott and senior Christine Giles each had one goal.
The Bulldogs used sophomore Payton Van Horn in goal for the first time. She made two saves, and junior Alli Dunning made two saves.
Jennifer Martinez, Brittney Herrera and Rachael Swisher recorded assists.
The Bulldogs (3-0) host South Fort Myers in their first home game Thursday.
Cape Coral 9, Island Coast 1: Carina Powell scored three goals, Emily Daniels and Christina Hunt added two, and the host Seahawks cruised past Island Coast.
Vikki Reno and Megan Terzak also scored for the Seahawks. Kianna Turmenne dished out two assists and Samantha Morreal had one assist.
Amanda Kopale (three saves) and Carole Farella (two saves) rotated in goal.
Junior Janelle Keary scored for the Gators and senior goalkeeper Merlin Alvarez tallied 20 saves.
Island Coast plays at Fort Myers at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Cape (1-1) plays Thursday at Lemon Bay.
