Early exit for Baker girls
The Ida Baker Bulldogs posted a program-best 17 wins on the volleyball court this season, but the season came to an early end Monday night in the District 4A-11 Tournament at Fort Myers High.
Lemon Bay swept all three games from the Bulldogs 25-22, 25-17, 25-17.
“We tried,” Baker coach Rene Van Horn said. “They had some heavy hitters on their front row. We were scrappy, kind of how we always are.”
Senior Chelsea Shafer led the Bulldogs (17-7) with seven kills and four digs. She got help from seniors Taylor Van Horn (five kills), Deonnah Findley (five kills, three digs), Taryn Maymon (four blocks) and Chelsey Cline (five digs).
Fort Myers 3, Mariner 0: The Mariner Tritons fell short of their upset bid against top seed Fort Myers. The host Wave prevailed 25-8, 25-10, 25-12 to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals.
Mariner (10-15) was led by junior Samantha Greenwell (seven assists, two aces) and senior Jamie Bentley (10 digs).
Island Coast 3, Dunbar 1: Island Coast pulled out a four-game victory over Dunbar 25-21, 28-26, 19-25, 25-19 and celebrated their first District 3A-12 Tournament victory.
The Gators’ reward is a match with undefeated top seed Bishop Verot Tuesday at LaBelle.
The Gators (6-16) took the first two sets against Dunbar and kept their composure after the Tigers forced a fourth game.
“We stayed focused and came back strong at the beginning (of game four),” Gators coach Cheryl Stauffer said.
Joanna Null (four aces), Dana Ruff (two aces, one kill), Lindsey Helverston (two aces), Sadie Alama (three blocks, two kills) and Casey Shank (two kills) contributed to the Gators’ attack.
