City Golf champs bidding for repeat
The Cape Coral City Golf Championship turns 21 this weekend with almost 150 players scheduled to tee off Saturday morning at Coral Oaks Golf Course.
“I’m pretty pleased with the entries,” said course head pro Allen Manguson. “We had 178 last year, which was the most ever, but it’s still higher than two years ago.”
Both the men’s and women’s champions from last year are back to defend their titles. Men’s titlist Riaan Potgieter and women’s champ Gigi Higgins are both Cape Coral residents.
Michael Martin, who won D Flight a year ago, and high schooler Kyle Schulte, who won B Flight, also return for this year’s 36-hole, two-day stroke play tournament. As flight champions, Martin and Schulte are required to move up one flight. The field is paired up in two women’s flights and five men’s flights this year.
“That’s where we’re really down (entries) this year,” said Manguson. “We’re missing the high school players, the most decline of any group. There are only three high school players this year.”
Donnie Hopper, another Cape resident, is back from a one-year absence after winning back-to-back men’s titles in 2005-06. He lost his bid to win three in a row in 2007, a feat accomplished only by George McNeill in tournament history.
Manguson praised the efforts of Embarq, the event’s major sponsor, and its representative and C Flight entry Steve Personette.
Players begin teeing off at 7:46 a.m. Saturday with morning and afternoon crossovers using the first and 10th tees. Sunday’s final round follows the same format with the field shuffled according to 18-hole scores. The men’s championship, A and B flights will tee off in the afternoon groups both days.
“The course is in good shape,” added Manguson. “It drains really well, so it got soaked or saturated for only two or three days all summer. I hope everyone enjoys it.”
