Prep Report: Baker boys on course for district
The Ida Baker Bulldogs continued their late-season surge on the golf course with an 18-stroke victory Wednesday over Port Charlotte, 159-177, at Palmetto Pine Country Club.
It’s the first time the Bulldogs (12-4) have broken 160 this season.
The Bulldogs turned in a strong showing at the LCAC Championship Monday, finishing second, six shots behind Fort Myers.
Junior Dylan Fine fired a 1-over-par 37 against Port Charlotte (8-11) Wednesday, garnering medalist honors, and senior Ryan Gallick scored 38.
The Bulldogs face North Fort Myers Thursday at Magnolia Landing, the final tune up before Monday’s District 2A-15 Tournament.
Ida Baker 159 – Dylan Fine 37, Ryan Gallick 38, Michael Faulkner 41, Bryr Austen 43.
Port Charlotte 177 – Brandon Herron 42, Alex Skidmore 44, Jovian Medina 45, Chris Hensler 46.
At Plantation: Mariner has seen its scores go up as the District 2A-15 Tournament approaches. In golf, that’s the wrong direction to be going this late in the season.
None of the Tritons broke 40 Wednesday and lost to South Fort Myers, 161-170.
“We are not playing well during crunch time,” Mariner coach Marty Waters said. “It’s the wrong time of the year not to be playing well. I’m a little concerned.”
C.J. Cricco and Kyle Schulte each shot 40 to lead the Tritons (13-4-1). The medalist was Alex Felice of South Fort Myers (12-4) with a 36.
South Fort Myers 161 – Alex Felice 36, Max Koenig 40, Austin Schultz 41, Alex Carlisle 44.
Mariner 170 – C.J. Cricco 40, Kyle Schulte 40, Dean Hofer 43, Braden Junkins 47.
Girls Golf
At Coral Oaks: Lehigh didn’t make the trip for their scheduled match against Mariner, resulting in a forfeit victory for the host Tritons.
The Tritons participate in the District 2A-15 Tournament Tuesday.
Volleyball
Bishop Verot 3, Labelle 0: The undefeated Vikings rolled past another opponent, sweeping overmatched LaBelle 25-12, 25-6, 25-13.
In the process, the Vikings (18-0) extended their regular season winning streak to 42 matches, dating back to 2007.
“That’s pretty neat,” Bishop Verot coach Wynn DePasquale said. “We just consistently have been a pretty solid program. The kids come in and work hard year after year. They come in ready to go.”
The senior trio of Ciara Brown (24 assists), Christa Brooks (eight kills) and Katie Mosher (six digs) led the Vikings’ all-around performance.
The Vikings host Gateway Charter Friday.
