SFM tops NFM 24-7
High-scoring and undefeated South Fort Myers had its toughest fight of the season, some of which was its own fault.
Ultimately, the Wolfpack prevailed with a couple of second-half scores and outlasted North Fort Myers 24-7 in a District 3A-11 tussle Friday night at Moody Field.
Three plays on its opening possession was all it took for the Wolfpack (6-0, 2-0 district) to get on the board. The 56-yard drive featured two long pass plays and consumed less than a minute. South quarterback Dallas Crawford capped it with a 30-yard touchdown strike to Sammy Watkins. Elias Mayer split the uprights with his PAT and a 7-0 lead at the 11:16 mark.
It was all downhill from there for the Wolfpack and Crawford. Two fumbles and three interceptions later, South clung to a 7-0 halftime lead.
“I was pleased with how hard our defense battled in the first half, causing five turnovers and we still didn’t lead,” said North coach Barry Goettemoeller. “It was a cleaner second half, but we couldn’t get anything going.”
North got into scoring range once in the first half when quarterback Nathan McIntosh hit Tre Boston with a short pass over the middle that the senior receiver took 43 yards to the South 12-yard line. Two sacks and a stuffed run play left the Knights out of field goal range at the 27.
South (5-0) fumbled the ball away twice in North territory. Then came three Crawford INTs, one of which was a takeaway by Boston that stopped South’s final drive of the half with eight seconds to go.
The Red Knights (2-4, 0-2) play at North Port next Friday.
