A variety of illnesses have hit the Cape Coral High athletic teams in the past few weeks. The boys’ swimming team, in particular, had up to 10 members out with flu-like symptoms, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Even with a deep team, the losses served as a setback for the Seahawks.

“Luckily we have so many. To other teams it would’ve been devastating,” Seahawks coach Dianne Kimble said, “but it was still uncomfortable.”

They welcomed some of those swimmers back Thursday night in a competitive dual meet at North Fort Myers.

The Seahawks won both the boys’ and girls’ meets by scores of 107-61 and 104-49.

Antonio Alvarez, who was coming off a bronchial infection, took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.43 seconds. In the 500 freestyle, freshman Mike Zizzamia shook off his illness and battled North’s Juan Bell from start to finish. Bell touched the wall first in 5:44.28 and Zizzamia reached in 5:45.06.

“It was a fun meet for the kids and very competitive,” Kimble said. “They were pushed and tried their hardest. That was awesome.”

In the girls’ competition, Cape was led by seniors Christina Todd and Meghan Cotugno, and sophomore Olivia Langford. They each won two individual events.

Kimble said Langford, who won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, is emerging as one of the team leaders.

“She always puts up her A game,” Kimble said. “She sets the tone for the other kids.”

Cape improved to 6-0 in both boys and girls.
