Prep Report: City rivals play close round
Five strokes is all that separated the Mariner, Cape Coral and Ida Baker boys’ golf teams Tuesday afternoon at Palmetto Pine Country Club.
When all the counting was finished, Mariner and Cape Coral tied for the low-scoring team at 157 with Ida Baker at 162.
Mariner’s Dean Hofer was the medalist with a 3-under-par 33. Teammate C.J. Cricco matched par at 36.
Tyler Doyle led the Seahawks with a 2-under 34 with H Halverson and Anthony Myers lending support with rounds of 39.
Dylan Fine set the pace for Baker with a 2-over 38 with Michael Faulkner coming in at 39.
“We had no senior leadership today,” said Baker coach Scott Conforte. “I thought the match would be tighter if we played well, but we didn’t play well, so, no, I’m not surprised (by the outcome). Mariner and Cape are good teams and they deserved to win today.”
The Bulldogs (11-4) return to action next Tuesday at Cypress Lake, while Mariner (7-2-1) hosts Fort Myers and Cape (6-4-1) visits Lehigh on Thursday.

Jessica Petrucci contributed five service aces and five digs for North (6-9), which hosts South Fort Myers Thursday night.
Ida Baker 3, Mariner 0: After posting victories over North Fort Myers, Island Coast and Cape Coral already this season, the host Bulldogs swept rival Mariner 25-13, 25-15, 25-8.
For now, it appears the Bulldogs have established themselves as the team to beat in the Cape area.
“It’s a great accomplishment because we worked so hard all these years, all the seniors and the underclassmen for the years they’ve been on here,” said senior Taylor Van Horn.
The Bulldogs (7-2) are in their fifth year since the school opened. It’s not a large team with 10 players, but they make up for it with teamwork and versatility.
That was the case against Mariner (3-7) with several players lending a hand. Senior Chelsea Shafer led with nine kills, Taylor Van Horn had five, and senior Taryn Maymon played a key role up front with six kills and eight blocks. Sophomores Payton Van Horn and Brenna Hambsch were consistent offensive threats.
The versatility is showing at other positions, including setter where sophomore Kali Nordquist has emerged along with one of the Bulldogs’ captains, senior Deonnah Findley. Nordquist and Findley finished with 11 assists each.
In game one, the Tritons grabbed an early 4-1 lead on three service points from senior Jamie Bentley and a blast by Jenny Betts. The Bulldogs took control, though, and benefited from a run of seven straight points to build an 18-8 lead.
At the start of game two, Maymon accounted for two blocks and two aces, helping the Bulldogs build an 11-4 advantage.
In game three, the Bulldogs gradually built a lead. Nordquist spread the ball to different hitters, and senior Chelsey Cline had a late serving run to help close out the match.
