FGCU women place second, men 5th in golf

The FGCU women’s golf team concluded the first tournament of the season with a second-place finish at the Eagles Golf Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Miromar Lakes Golf Club.

Freshman Briana Carlson finished the tournament atop the leaderboard with a three-round score of 223 (72-74-77).

The Eagles earned the second-place finish with a team score of 944 (314-321-309). Florida Atlantic led all teams with a 54-hole total of 941 (320-309-312).

Also placing in the top 10 individually was FGCU junior Lina Elmsater, who tied for seventh with a tournament score of 237 (78-81-78).

The Eagles tee up again on Oct. 4 in Bradenton at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational.

Meanwhile, the men’s team opened the season in Manhattan, Kan., at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate tournament.

The Eagles tied for fifth. After finishing the first round in eighth place, the Eagles climbed the leaderboard on the final day to finish in the top five.

FGCU finished the 36-hole event with a team total of 610 (321-289). Tournament host, Kansas State, finished first with a team score of 569 (287-282).

FGCU junior Josh Leppo finished tied for 18th overall and led the Eagles with a score of 151 (78-73). Junior Daniel Mazziotta tied for 21st overall with 152 (79-73).

Originally scheduled to be a 54-hole tournament, the event was reduced to 36 holes due to a rain-delayed start Monday morning.

The FGCU men’s team is back on the course Oct. 1 when they head to Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., for the Mission Inn Intercollegiate.
