Cape Coral Soccer Association named top program

The Cape Coral Soccer Association is striking the right balance, providing a fun environment for young players while continuing to place a strong emphasis on coaching.

The association averages between 2,500 to 3,000 members per year, making it one of the largest clubs in the state.

Last week the Florida Youth Soccer Association took notice when it gave the CCSA its Program of the Year Award.

“There are a lot of good people involved and the kids really enjoy it,” said Steve Duquette, who is serving in his third year as CCSA President.

The CCSA runs its in-house recreational leagues in both the fall and spring, in addition to a competitive program for advanced players. The youngest level is the 4-year-old “lollipop” division with the ages continuing on up to 18.

Duquette said one of the strengths of the program is the continuity among coaches at all levels.

Eddie Carmean, the director of coaching, holds clinics before the season, and continues to monitor and assist young coaches throughout the season.

“No other recreational program has a full-time director of coaching,” Duquette said. “It’s beneficial to our program as coaches change.”

The FYSA selected the CCSA as the Program of the Year for a variety of factors, including its consistent growth, player and coaching development, and the exceptional relationship with the City of Cape Coral.
