Ross shines for 16U team
Louie Ross just missed hitting a home run in one of her at-bats last Tuesday in a national 16U All-Star Softball Game, in front of coach es from many of the top college softball programs in the country.
The 14-year-old from Cape Coral did enough to catch their attention.
Ross settled for a ground-rule double to finish 2-for-2 at the plate and played three different positions – 3B, SS and 2B – in the Adidas Legends All-Star Game in Boulder, Colo.
Ross, who is entering her sophomore year at Ida Baker, traveled to Boulder to compete with her Team FLA 16U Gold squad in a prestigious national tournament.
In addition, an All-Star Game was held, showcasing a select group of 24 players from around the country.
Ross was among those players who participated in that game. There were approximately 40-50 Division I schools in attendance, including Indiana, Florida State, Auburn and Michigan.
If there was added pressure, Ross didn’t let it show.
“She was very calm out there,” said her father, Jim Ross. “She was smiling and having fun.”
Ross has been playing for the 16U Gold Team since last fall. The team played 10 games in Boulder. One of their victories came against the top-ranked team from Orange County, Calif.
In her freshman year at Ida Baker, Ross smacked five home runs and compiled a .329 batting average.
