FSL picks 8 Miracle All-Stars

2 min read

The Fort Myers Miracle will host the 48th annual Florida State League All-Star Game June 20, and are well represented on the South Division squad.

The team rosters were announced Thursday by league president Chuck Murphy and seven current Miracle players were selected. The Miracle is hosting the FSL mid-season showcase for the fourth time at Hammond Stadium.

The South Division squad includes Miracle pitchers David Bromberg and Spencer Steedley; catcher Danny Lehman; infielders Chris Cates and Steve Singleton; outfielders Ben Revere and Chris Parmalee. Pitcher Carlos Gutierrez also was selected, but will not participate due to his recent promotion to Double-A New Britain.

The eight selections are a club record eclipsing the seven that participated in last year’s game in Brevard County.

The Miracle rallied for an unearned run in the 10th inning Thursday night to clip the Clearwater Threshers 9-8 at Hammond Stadium.

Pinch-hitter Ben Revere reached on an error to open the Miracle 10th, stole second and was sacrificed to third. Deibinson Romero (3-for-5) then lofted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Revere with the game-winning run.

There were six lead changes before the Miracle snapped a season-long three-game losing streak.

The Miracle scored first in the bottom of the first, but the Threshers (25-24) answered against the rehabbing Glen Perkins. Cody Overbeck greeted him with a two-run home run to left-center followed by Derrick Mitchell’s solo blast as the Threshers took a 3-2 lead.

The Miracle currently lead the South Division with a 33-19 record and hold a 5 1/2-game lead over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (26-23), who lost to the Daytona Cubs 6-3 Thursday night.

All-Star players were selected by a vote of league managers, official scorers and club sports writers.

Miracle manager Jeff Smith, pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Jim Dwyer, trainer Larry Bennese and strength coach Mike MacDonald will be part of the South Division staff.

North All-Star members represent Brevard County, Daytona Beach, Tampa, Dunedin, Clearwater and Lakeland. The South team represents St. Lucie, Sarasota, Charlotte, Palm Beach, Fort Myers and Jupiter.

The Miracle and Threshers go at it again at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
