Baker’s Byrd to run in Nike national meet

1 min read

Joseph Byrd of Ida Baker High School had a banner junior season in track, which included finishing second overall in both the 100- and 200-meter runs at the Class 3A state meet.

Now he’ll test himself at the national level.

The Bulldogs sprinter earned a spot in the Nike Outdoor Nationals meet based on his times during the high school campaign. The national competition is June 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C.

At the Nike Outdoor Nationals, Byrd will run both the 100 and 200.

This past season, Byrd won LCAC, district and regional titles, in the 100. He ran a best time of 10.40 seconds at the LCAC meet and 10.62 in the state finals, finishing second behind Eastside’s John Little.

In the 200, Byrd turned in the fastest preliminary time of 21.55 seconds at the state meet, but took second in the finals behind Charlotte’s Mike Bellamy.
