Eagles win on Senior Day
Mariner High grad Josh Upchurch and the rest of the Florida Gulf Coast seniors wrapped up their careers at Swanson Stadium with a 12-2 victory Saturday over Stetson.
Pete Woodworth struck out a season high 10 batters for the Eagles.
The Eagles ( 36-18, 23-7) finished the 2009 season as the regular season A-Sun Champions.
The Eagles racked up 13 hits on the day, which is the 40th time the Eagles put up 10 or more hits in a game.
Woodworth earned his fifth win of the season, tossing seven innings and surrendered eight hits and two runs.
Seniors Nick Ursitti and Ryan Horton each pitched scoreless innings in relief.
The Eagles scored first in the bottom of the second. Brad Roberts singled, Mariner grad Robert Greene walked, and freshman Joe Guarnaccia drove in the first run on an RBI single. Mikel Alvarez added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Eagles got the offense going again in the fifth inning as they scored four runs on four hits to make the score 6-0. Zach Maxfield led off with a single up the middle and Robert followed with a single. Guarnaccia picked up another RBI and Upchurch added a two-run single.
The Eagles blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth making the score 12-2. Upchurch had another RBI single, finishing 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Four Eagles recorded multiple hits. Maxfield went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI, Roberts went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and Guarnaccia went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a career-high four RBI.
The Eagles finished the 2009 season, taking eight of 10 conference series, including five sweeps.
In two years in the A-Sun, the Eagles are 48-15 in the conference.
