MICHAEL PISTELLA Mariner High senior Robert Clifton signs a football scholarship letter-of-intent Friday to attend Marian College. At his side were his parents, Robert and Annette, with Mariner principal Erik Cioffi, football coach Chad O’Brien and athletic director Vito Mennona observing the event.

With a hard-working and fiery attitude, and talent, Mariner senior Robert Clifton became a staple of the Tritons’ defense over the past two years. All are qualities that should serve him well as he makes the leap to the next level.

He’ll continue his education and football career at Marian College in Indianapolis after signing Friday with the school.

“His drive and determination will make him successful,” Mariner football coach Chad O’Brien said. “He will not only be an excellent player for them, he will graduate with his degree.”

Clifton came on during his junior season. He helped a Tritons defensive unit that posted three shutouts and held opponents to around 11 points per game. The Tritons finished 6-4 and nearly made the Class 5A playoffs.

Even with some other experienced players surrounding him, Clifton registered 98 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks.

He built on that performance as senior, becoming more of a leader and a presence on the defensive line. He tallied a team-high 84 tackles and received the team Defensive MVP honors.

O’Brien said Clifton’s versatility sets him up for success at Marian.

“He could have played any of the front eight positions on our defense,” O’Brien said. “He will bring the same spark to the defense up there that he did here at Mariner.”
