Ave Maria signs first 2 for softball

1 min read

The Ave Maria University women’s softball team, preparing to begin intercollegiate play in 2010, has signed its first two players, high school teammates from the greater Fort Lauderdale area.

Kristin Roberts and Melissa Tejeda both started at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, which recently captured a Class 4A district championship with a win over nationally ranked Pembroke Pines Charter before losing a rematch in the regional.

Roberts, an infielder, and Tejeda, an outfielder, became the Gyrenes’ first softball recruits at a May 1 signing ceremony at their high school.

Roberts hit .472 in 25 games with 24 RBI. Tejeda batted .386 and stole a team-leading 21 bases.
