BMX features father, daughter
BMX racing prides itself on being a sport the entire family can compete in together.
That goal is particularly evident with the Cape Coral BMX Track’s nominations for Rider and New Rider of the Month for May. The featured riders are father and daughter.
Bob Murray is the Rider of the Month. He has been racing in the 42 Cruiser class for about two months after returning from an extended time away from racing because his track in Elyria, Ohio, closed.
Murray, 42, recently moved his family to Cape Coral and discovered the Cape Coral BMX Track. While checking out the track for the first time, Murray’s daughter tagged along and caught the racing bug, too. Now he and Makayla race together while his wife, Dawn, and their 4-year-old son, Pierson, cheer for both of them.
Makayla, 12, holds her own racing against boys and girls her age, and is the New Rider of the Month.
Makayla, a 6th-grader at Mariner Middle School, has played basketball, ran track and played soccer in the past, but now devotes her time almost exclusively to BMX.
