Baker boys claim 3A-13 track title
Ida Baker junior Joseph Byrd showcased his speed at the District 3A-13 Track Meet, sprinting to first place in the 100 and 200 events. That led an all-around effort by the Bulldogs, which resulted in their first district track title Friday at Palmetto Ridge.
Byrd, also a member of the winning 4×100 relay team, and several of his Bulldog teammates advanced to Wednesday’s 3A-Region 4 meet at Merritt Island
Along with Byrd, the 4×100 team included Mike Rivera, Marvin Riedewald and Josh Schwartz. The Bulldogs continued their success in the relays, placing second in both the 4×400 and 4×800.
In the field events, the Bulldogs got a second-place finish from Andrew Haynes in the pole vault and a third-place finish from Jared Jackson in the discus.
The Bulldogs ended with 115 points, distancing themselves from Barron Collier in second.
In the girls’ competition, the Bulldogs finished 2-3 in the discus thanks to Taryn Maymon and Katelyn Glaser.
Junior Taylor Van Horn finished second in the high jump. Freshman Payton Van Horn qualified in both the 100 hurdles and triple jump. Junior Jessica Lerner took fourth in the 100.
Lerner teamed up with Glaser, Isa Miranda and Jessica Sanchez to finish second in the 4×100 relay.
