Cape boys 3rd in district track
The District 4A-7 Track Meet delivered a climactic boys’ 4×400 relay with Mariner and Cape High running 1-2.
The Tritons’ David Tyrrell, Harrison Kuchman, Jerren Julien and Andrew Dukas placed first with a time of 3:32.07. The Seahawks’ quartet of Tevan Gant, Arlen Elwin, Taylor Henninge and Edsel Caprice, ran 3:34.73.
Dukas, who also set a school record in the 400, rallied on the final leg of the relay.
Tritons coach Mitch Kurliss was proud of the performance, but believes the foursome can do much better at regionals, considering their busy week that included working out for football and playing intramural basketball on the side.
“I was very happy,” he said, “but I feel they got a lot left in them for next week.”
Mariner, Cape and North Fort Myers qualified several athletes for regionals at Thursday’s district meet at North Port.
The Cape boys, who placed third in the team standings, got strong performances in the relays and sprints. They finished second in the 4×800, 4×100 and 4×400. Junior Jeremy Davis placed second in the 100 behind Venice’s Adrion Archer.
Cape’s Jaylen Watkins took the title in the high jump, clearing 6-feet, while North’s Zach Kovacik won the 3200 in 10:01.17.
In the girls’ high jump, Mariner senior Courtney Anderson was unchallenged. She cleared 5-6 to take the title with the second-best jump at 4-10.
Mariner senior Emily LaBarbera delivered a strong all-around effort, winning the 3200, placing second in the 1600, and leading the Tritons to third place in the 4×800 relay.
North senior Jasmine Roberts claimed district titles in both the long jump and 100.
