Kaitlyn Dampier Cape Coral Seahawks Sophomore Tennis

In terms of heart, the Cape Coral Seahawks know what to expect from sophomore Kaitlyn Dampier each time she steps on the tennis court.

As far as her playing ability and shotmaking, it’s more difficult to predict since Dampier continues to improve.

Dampier started her freshman year as a junior varsity player then climbed to the Seahawks’ No. 5 singles spot. She moved primarily into the No. 4 spot this season, but also has been forced to play at No. 3.

“No matter where I put her, she’s ready to step up to the plate,” Sea-hawks coach Betty Henderson said.

The Daily Breeze Female Athlete of the Week faced a major test last week and prevailed in a thrilling three-set match (6-2, 2-6, 6-3) at No. 3 against Mariner’s Adrienne Wadsworth. That came after Dampier defeated Island Coast’s No. 2 Kelsey Gates (6-1, 6-4) Tuesday.

Dampier thus improved her singles record to 11-2.

“I try not to focus on what position I’m in that day,” Dampier said. “I just try to do my best.”

Dampier has been playing several years, but mostly individually in USTA before joining the Seahawks. She credits her improvement to working with coaches and teammates, including senior Renee Deane.

Deane, the Seahawks’ top player, and Dampier have been doubles partners and lost only two matches at No. 1.

“Renee has helped me a lot in improving my strokes,” Dampier said.

Individually, Dampier tries to figure out her opponent quickly and build an attack plan from there.

“I try to look for my opponent’s weakness and try to really play that out, and make them run,” she said.

Dampier is focused on Seahawks tennis, but also is preparing to compete in the Spring Fling powderpuff football game at the school.

Honorable mentions:

Caitlin Holloway, senior, Ida Baker softball: Holloway continues to lead the Bulldogs at the plate, producing a three-run double in a win at Barron Collier. She was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI in a win at Cape Coral.

Dana Ruff, freshman, Island Coast softball: Ruff delivered an inside-the-park grand slam in the Gators’ varsity win at East Lee County. She also pitched two complete-game victories in the Gators’ three varsity wins.
