A Cape Coral PAL wrestler has won the “I Own Florida” award after winning his division in the final tournament of the AAU State Championship Series in Bradenton on March 14.

Christian Jurney, a 13-year-old who attends Trafalgar Middle School, won all six tournaments in his age and weight class in the championship series to earn the award.

Christian entered the AAU State Championship Series the “I Own Florida” award in January. The series consists of six tournaments hosted in Manatee, Riverdale, North Port, Venice, Gulf Coast (Naples) and Bradenton. To win the “I Own Florida” award, a wrestler has to win his age and weight class at all six events. More than 300 kids entered the tournament, and only seven were successful.

Christian competed in the 13- & 14-year-old, 120 lb. division and compiled a perfect 26-0 record for the series, winning both the “I Own Florida” award and the AAU State Championship at the March 14 event.

On March 21, Christian traveled to Palmetto Ridge High School in Naples to compete in the USA Wrestling Florida State Championships. He also won this state title in the 13- & 14-year-old, 120 lb. division, winning all of his matches by pinning his opponents.

Christian, who will be a freshman next year, will begin focusing on the high school divisions as he prepares for his high school wrestling career. He will be competing in numerous off-season tournaments throughout the state, and attending various wrestling camps.
