Thirteen different players have competed in varsity tennis matches for the Cape Coral Seahawks this season.

That’s a luxury, but also a challenge for coach Dave Fortner in making the lineup sheet and keeping each player satisfied with the amount of work they’re getting.

Players like senior captain Dylon Dixon have helped set an example. Dixon has been flexible, showing the willingness to play at a variety of singles spots and against a wide-range of competition.

“I just try to stick to my game regardless,” said Dixon. “When I don’t do that, I fall off.”

The Daily Breeze Male Athlete of the Week mostly has been on this season. He has compiled a 7-0 singles record, which includes a pair of hard-fought victories last week against Island Coast and Mariner.

Dixon posted a 6-1, 3-6 (10-8) win over Island Coast’s No. 2, and then grinded out a 6-3, 3-6 (10-5) win over Mariner’s No. 5.

Though Dixon is in his fourth season with the Seahawks, and second as a captain, he’s making his biggest impact this year.

“I put in a lot of hard work before the season,” said Dixon, who also trains at Park Meadows in Fort Myers. “No prior year has matched up with this one.”

In addition to his singles success, Dixon continues to be one of the Seahawks’ key doubles players.

Last year, he teamed up with Joel Silverberg at No. 2 doubles and advanced to the district semifinals. That same pair competes at No. 1 doubles and have posted a 7-1 mark this season.

The Seahawks’ 10-1 team record can be attributed to players like Dixon, bolstering the lineup from top to bottom.

Honorable mentions:

Daniel Alimonti, junior, Mariner baseball: Alimonti had two hits, including a three-run homer, in Mariner’s 11-3 win at Gulf Coast Friday. He’s hit four home runs this season.

Bobby Borchering, senior, Bishop Verot baseball: In two games last week, Borchering went 5-for-7 at the plate with two home runs – giving him seven on the year – and a double.
