Oasis High is on the rise
The city’s next high school building is on its way and, by all accounts, the athletic program has found solid ground.
A groundbreaking took place last month for the new Oasis High School, located in southwest Cape Coral, but the Buccaneers have competed in several junior varsity and one varsity sport this academic year.
The baseball team picked up its first JV victory last Saturday, defeating Cape Coral Christian 11-1.
Sports at the junior varsity level included baseball, volleyball and boys’ and girls’ basketball. Swimming was the lone varsity sport, but that figures to change next year with baseball moving up while volleyball, basketball, cross country, track & field, golf and tennis will play a mixed schedule.
“It’s going well,” Oasis athletic director Dave Montrose said. “It’s hard to gauge with a small group of students how much interest there will be in athletics, but it’s definitely coming together. We believe the program is going to give students something to get excited about in the coming years.”
Oasis is in its second academic year. There are approximately 75 students in the ninth and 10th grades, which are housed in the middle school. Since the high school and middle school students share the same campus and have the same principal, eighth-grade students are allowed to play on the junior varsity and varsity teams, similar to Canterbury School in Fort Myers.
The new Oasis High will stand beside the existing Oasis Middle and Elementary charter schools on Oasis Boulevard, near Ida Baker High School.
Montrose estimates that the number of students when the school reaches capacity, meaning grades 9-12, could be around 700.
Oasis has been assigned to Class A by the FHSAA and will compete in districts next year in some sports, but are not eligible for district playoffs and championships. They must complete two years as an independent, with 2009-10 being the second year.
