Firecats trim camp roster
Linebacker Derron Thomas and lineman Arthur Smith are among the first players cut from the Florida Firecats’ preseason training camp.
The Firecats placed both on their recallable reassignment list. The team has 48 hours to reclaim them from recallable reassignment before another team is able to claim them. The ‘Cats also recently released quarterback Omar Haugabook and receiver Keith Brown.
“It usually takes about a week for guys to get used to the pace of the arena game,” said Firecats coach Kevin Bouis. “Some guys were picking it up faster than others and so we decided to keep the ones around who were showing good signs of progression.”
The cuts have come since the team’s first scrimmage last Saturday. The training camp roster currently is 30 players. The Firecats must cut at least eight more by March 16 to get down to the regular season roster size of 22 players.
Fullback Colt Colletti was suspended after a three-day mini-camp that began March 1. They also placed lineman Larry Brown on the refused to report list after the mini-camp.
The Firecats’ second scrimmage is 6 p.m. Thursday at Estero High School, and is open to the public.
The Firecats open the arenafootball2 regular season at Germain Arena March 21 against South Georgia.
