FGCU pounds Samford 10-4

The FGCU Eagles defeated Samford 10-4 Thursday in the first game of the FGCU Baseball Classic. The Eagles pounded out 15 hits against the Bulldogs, who scored in the top of the first inning and again in the third inning.

The Eagles (2-3) answered with one run in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and four more in the sixth to take the lead 9-4. FGCU added the final run in the bottom of the eighth when Samford’s Joshua VanFleteren issued a bases-loaded walked.

The first five Eagles batters combined for 11 hits in 20 official at-bats, led by sophomore Steven Wickens (2-for-2, 2R, 1RBI) who has at least one hit in every game this year. Sophomore Bobby Greene (3-for-4) added a leadoff home run in the fifth.

The Eagles, who snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, face the Towson Tigers at 8 p.m. Friday. The tournament continues with games Saturday against USF and Sunday against Bethune-Cookman.
