Prep Report: North to honor Dewey
When the North Fort Myers Red Knights softball teams takes the field Tuesday night against Cape Coral, former athletic director Bobbie Dewey will be on their minds and in their hearts.
Dewey, the first female high school athletic director in Lee County and one of the first in Florida, was a strong proponent of women’s sports. In her decade of service in the job, which started in 1988, she developed programs for girls to equal status with the boys.
Dewey passed away 11 years ago after a battle with breast cancer, and the school’s softball field, which she helped get built, is named after her.
The Red Knights will remember Dewey Tuesday night, raising awareness in the fight against cancer as well as to raise funds for the Bobbie Dewey scholarship fund. The scholarship is awarded each year to a male and female student who display Dewey’s characteristics of sportsmanship, dedication, hard work and Red Knight Spirit.
