Prep Report: Island Coast gets first win 4-1

5 min read

The third time was the charm for the Island Coast Gators baseball team.

After getting waxed 10-3 and 10-0 earlier this week in the Cape Coral Early Bird Tournament at Terry Park, the Gators earned their first win of the season – and first win as a varsity program – with a 4-1 victory over Cape Coral Friday.

The game was for fifth place in the six-team tournament, but that didn’t matter as much as the victory itself.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, the Gators strung together four straight base hits with two outs to push across three runs. Senior Marco Losauro (1-for-3, 2 RBI) drove in the tying run with a double. Freshman Randy Petito followed with a single to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Gators left-handed pitcher Taylor Renegar, a sophomore, picked up the win with seven innings of work, allowing three hits and striking out six. Petito was solid behind the plate and threw out three baserunners stealing.

Cape pitcher Koji Spangler also went the distance and was saddled with the loss. The Seahawks dipped to 0-3 on the season heading into their next game Tuesday at North Fort Myers.

Senior Alex Torres drove in Cape’s only run with a single in the first inning.

The Gators (1-2) host Naples Seacrest Country Day in their home field debut Tuesday.
