Cape Coral High dominated the doubles matches Wednesday to pull out a 5-2 boys’ tennis season-opening victory over North Fort Myers.

The host Seahawks got singles wins from Arthemon Lis, Alex Ragonese and Caleb Erdner to head into doubles play leading 3-2. Joel Silverberg and Lis won at No. 1 doubles 9-7 while Ragonese and Najja Derrick won 8-5 at No. 2 to seal the victory.

The Seahawks (1-0) host Ida Baker Thursday while North (0-1) hosts Mariner at Judd Park.

Singles – Jesus Lugones (NFM) def. Joel Silverberg 6-4, 3-6, 11-9; Arthemon Lis (CC) def. Zach Fischer 6-3, 6-2; Alex Ragonese (CC) def. Bradley Allen 6-4, 6-1; Alex Reynolds (NFM) def. Najja Derrick 6-3, 6-4; Caleb Erdner (CC) def. Sid Feldman 6-3, 0-6, 10-8.

Doubles – Silverberg-Lis (CC) def. Lugones-Fischer 9-7; Ragonese-Derrick (CC) def. Allen-Reynolds 8-5.

Cypress Lake 4, Mariner 3: Cypress Lake edges Mariner in a tight season-opening tennis match.

Danzille Bent and Steven Allen won singles matches for the Tritons while Tim Connelly and Nathaniel Gunnin came through with a doubles victory.

The Tritons (0-1) face North Fort Myers Thursday at Judd Park.

Singles – Parker Woodall (CL) def. Aaron Smith 6-0, 6-1; Eugenly Kim (CL) def. Tim Connelly 6-2, 6-0; Danzille Bent (M) def. Ilya Matchokin 7-5, 6-4; Andrew Smith (CL) def. Nathaniel Gunnin 6-3, 6-4; Steven Allen (M) def. Mathias O’Connor 6-0, 7-5.

Doubles – Woodall-Kim (CL) def. Smith-Bent 6-3, 6-0; Connelly-Gunnin (M) def. Matchokin-Blankenship 6-3, 6-4.

Girls Tennis

Fort Myers 6, Island Coast 1: Island Coast made its varsity tennis debut in a loss at Fort Myers.

The Gators lost three singles matches and had to forfeit two, while winning one and forfeiting one in doubles. Kenzi Polotto and Kelsey Gates won the school’s first varsity doubles match 8-6.

The Gators (0-1) host Cypress Lake Thursday.

Singles – Stephanie Fall (FM) def. Kenzi Polotto 6-1, 6-2; Katelyn Dorwart (FM) def. Kelsey Gates 6-0, 6-1; Shanda Kumar (FM) def. Denise Goldstein 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles – Polotto-Gates (IC) def. Kara Cherkin-Nicole Brillenborg 8-6.

Lacrosse

Bishop Verot 11, Cape Coral 10: It took double sudden-death overtime to determine a winner in Cape High’s one-point loss to Bishop Verot Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Tara Murza made 17 saves in the net for the Seahawks. Jamie Whetsell led the team with five goals and Carly Boscarino made three interceptions.

The Seahawks (0-2) host Cypress Lake on Monday.

Baseball

Fort Myers 10, Island Coast 0: Fort Myers rapped 13 base hits, led by Ethan Drew’s two doubles and four RBI, in a Cape Coral Early Bird Tournament victory over Island Coast at Terry Park.

Taylor Renegar singled in the first inning to account for Island Coast’s only base hit. The Gators (0-2) face Cape Coral in a consolation game at 4 p.m. Friday.

North Port 15, Ida Baker 10: The Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a two-run home run by Jason Eick, but lost in a slugfest to North Port.

Blake Fraser went 2-for-4 with two doubles for the Bulldogs (0-2).

They host Palmetto Ridge Friday.

Mariner 7, Palmetto Ridge 6: It was only fitting that in a game that included 12 errors, the host Tritons scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth when Palmetto Ridge failed to come up with a fly ball off the bat of Angel Laborde.

Anthony Santo scored to give the Tritons (2-0) their second straight victory to open the season.

The Tritons trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, but Audry Santana came through with an RBI single and Bryan O’Connor and Alex Santana each drew bases-loaded walks to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Alex Santana went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Spencer McKee had two hits for the Tritons.

They host Port Charlotte Friday.
