Prep Report: Cape girls finished off in 57-31 loss

Only a few minutes into Thursday night’s Region 5A-4 quarterfinal game at “The Nest,” it was clear that Davie Nova presented more problems than the Cape Coral Seahawks could answer.
The Titans were multi-dimensional on the offensive end, showing the ability to score inside and out, and their quickness and hustle led to second-chance points.
The Titans were equally as competent on defense, which prevented the Seahawks from getting quality shots.
The game followed that similar pattern for four quarters, with the Seahawks falling 57-31.
“We lost to a better team,” Seahawks coach Olivia Myers said. “There is not much you can do when you’re outtalented.”
The Seahawks (19-8) did what they could. They played hard throughout and concluded one of the best seasons in school history.
They won the program’s first district title last Saturday with a victory over North Fort Myers.
Though Thursday’s game was easy to dissect, the hard part comes next season when the Seahawks have to replace seven seniors, including Alexiss Griffin, Jardin McCarthy, Christine Gaywood, Stephanie De Los Santos, Brittany Bunch, Cierra Dotson and Marianne Davila.
“To be honest, yeah, we lost, but we’re more saddened because we’re losing seven seniors who have been like our daughters,” Myers said.
Gaywood led the Seahawks with 10 points and Griffin finished with eight, though points were difficult against Nova’s well-positioned defense.
The Seahawks also challenged defensively, but the Titans (24-3) created more opportunities with their passing and attacking the offensive boards.
In the opening quarter, Jassany Williams and Clarissa Coddington ignited Nova, scoring inside, and Tonya Aaron knocked down a three, triggering a 9-2 start.
The Seahawks managed just six field goal attempts in the first quarter against the Titans.
Junior Jomaris Vasquez made a driving shot in the lane and Gaywood and De Los Santos added baskets.
The Titans stretched the lead to 23-7 midway through the second before Gaywood scored, ending a five-minute scoring drought.
Leading by 15 at the start of the third quarter, Nova continued to attack inside with Williams. She scored eight of her 16 points in the third, and pulled down nine rebounds. Aaron, Coddington and Dominique Jackson each added 10.
