Prep Report: Cape girls advance in 5A-15
Christine Gaywood came through in the clutch with seven points in the fourth quarter to help Cape Coral hold off a comeback bid by Gulf Coast and advance to the championship game of the District 5A-15 Tournament with a 52-49 victory Friday night at The Nest.
The No. 2 seeded Seahawks will face No. 5 seeded North Fort Myers in the title game at 7 p.m. Saturday. North upset No. 1 seeded Barron Collier 57-54 in double overtime.
The Seahawks led most of the way, enjoying a 31-20 cushion at halftime. The Sharks mounted their comeback with a 13-8 run in the third quarter to pull within 39-33. The Sharks had a two-point lead with a minute left in the fourth quarter, but Gaywood converted a three-point play with 40 seconds remaining and Jardin McCarthy iced the win with two free throws with seven seconds left.
Riki Carach led Gulf Coast with 21 points.
Alexiss Griffin led the Seahawks with 23 points, but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Gaywood finished with 10 points as did Jomaris Vasquez.
