Five-goal burst lifts Blades 6-5
Thanks to a surge of five goals in less than five minutes in the third period, the Florida Everblades came away with a 6-5 comeback win over the South Carolina Stingrays Tuesday night at Germain Arena.
The teams, who have become very familiar with each other this season, battled for two periods.
It was a 1-1 deadlock heading into the second period with the Everblades (32-9-2) carrying the momentum and looking to put away their South Division rival. The Stingrays had other plans, however, after losing 7-1 to the Blades on their home ice just five days ago.
The Stingrays posted three goals in the second period, to put the Blades down 4-1 heading to the final period.
“We didn’t play a very good game in the first two periods,” Blades coach Malcolm Cameron said.
The Blades’ play turned around like whiplash in the third period.
With less than seven minutes to play Mathieu Roy started the five-goal scoring barrage.
“As we all know we are a team that can score in bunches,” said Cameron.
Kevin Baker’s scored 2:30 later. Then came two quick goals, the first off the stick of Earnie Hartlieb just 10 seconds into a power play to tie it at 4-4, and Andrew Fournier put the Blades in front 5-4 just 23 seconds later.
Less than a minute after Fournier’s goal, Roy scored to seal it.
The Blades and Stingrays (22-17-5) skate again, for the 10 time this season, Wednesday at Germain Arena.
