Prep Report: SFM nips Cape in OT
South Fort Myers overcame a double-digit lead to force overtime, then put the game on ice to claim the Lee County Athletic Conference title with a 47-44 victory Thursday night over Cape Coral.
After opening a 21-10 lead through the first quarter, the Seahawks stumbled in the second period when they were outscored 9-3 to lead just 24-19 at intermission.
South used a 10-4 surge in the fourth quarter to finally catch the Seahawks just in time to force overtime. Cape’s Christine Gaywood fouled out during the run, opening the middle for the Wolfpack.
South scored first in the overtime period and held Cape at bay with layups and free throws with Gaywood out of the lineup. The Seahawks were awarded just six free throws the entire game, and hit three of them.
Alexis Griffin led the Seahawks with 12 points while Gaywood finished with 11. Jardin McCarthy contributed nine points. Stephanie De Los Santos chipped in with six, Brittany Bunch four and Kassie Griffin two.
The Seahawks (16-8) host Ida Baker Tuesday night in the District 5A-15 Tournament quarterfinals.

Ida Baker 51, Dunbar 37: Senior Brooke Bursiek pumped in a game-high 20 points to lead Ida Baker to ninth place in the LCAC with a victory over Dunbar in a crossover match.
The Bulldogs (6-16) play their final regular season game Friday night at Charlotte.

Girls Soccer
Regional Quarterfinals: Bishop Verot got the first goal of the game and the last goal, but it was the four quick, unanswered goals early in the second half that carried St. Petersburg Catholic to a 4-2 victory in Region 3A-3 Thursday at Viking Stadium.
Kady Otzko scored both goals for the Vikings (12-6-1), who got 10 saves from goalkeeper Amber Law.
St. Pete Catholic tied the game 1-1 just 30 seconds into the second half, followed by three goals in succession over the next 20 minutes.
In other regional quarterfinals Thursday night:
St. Thomas Aquinas knocked off Fort Myers 4-2 in Class 5A and Barron Collier extended its season with a 2-0 win over Hollywood Hills.
In Class 4A, Cypress Lake dumped Palmetto Ridge 5-1 and Naples silenced Riverdale 4-0.
In Class 2A, Both Evangelical Christian and Community School of Naples saw their seasons come to the end. ECS lost to Sarasota Out-of-Door 4-3 and Naples lost to Bradenton St. Stephen’s 8-0.
Boys Basketball
Ida Baker 64, South Fort Myers 56: Ida Baker rode a balanced scoring attack to victory over South Fort Myers.
Four players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, led by Jonathan Skinner with 14 points and 12 rebounds, Ron Ward with 12, and Gabe Rodriguez and Rob Serrano with 10 points apiece. Rodriguez also had six steals.
The Bulldogs (15-8) led from start to finish, enjoying a 10-point cushion most of the game. They host Cape Coral Friday night in a key District 5A-15 matchup that could earn the Bulldogs the No. 2 seeding for the tournament.
The victory matches the school record for wins in a season (15), which the Bulldogs established just last season.
