Prep Report: Korytkowski lifts Tritons to 2-1 victory

4 min read

It’s only appropriate that senior Tyler Korytkowski scored both goals for the Mariner Tritons Tuesday night in their 2-1 victory over Gulf Coast in the boys’ District 5A-15 soccer tournament.

Korytkowski, the Tritons’ leading scorer all season, has been on fire in recent weeks. He scored early in the first half and again early in the second half to put the Tritons up 2-0.

“The goals were the result of good creativity by Tyler,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas. “He’s has been gaining more and more confidence lately.”

Both goals were unassisted gems.

The No. 6-seed Gulf Coast Sharks managed one goal in a mad scramble in front of the net after a corner kick with about 10 minutes remaining. They had several opportunities to score in the final minutes, but Tritons goalkeeper Renato Proia made several key saves and finished with seven total.

The third-seeded Tritons (13-8-4) advance to the district semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday against No. 2-seed Barron Collier.

The other semifinal sends No. 5-seed Cape Coral against No. 1-seed Fort Myers at 7:30 p.m. Both semifinals are at Mariner.

n Barron Collier 1, North Fort Myers 0: North Fort Myers gave No. 2-seed Barron Collier all it wanted in a district quarterfinal game at Collier.

North goalkeeper Chris Hamilton made 15 saves, but one shot got through after a corner kick to give the Cougars the victory.

The game remained scoreless until about 15 minutes remained. That’s when Kory Kubocks tapped the ball into the net for the game’s only goal.

The Red Knights finish the season 7-11-2.
