After taking an early lead, the Cape Coral Seahawk wrestlers couldn’t maintain the momentum and were handed a 53-30 defeat in a dual meet Monday night at Fort Myers High.

The Seahawks won five of the seven heaviest weight classes as they tuned up for the LCAC meet Saturday at Cape High.

Shawn Hart and Nelson Ochoa helped give the Seahawks their early lead by winning their respective matches, both by pins. Hart took the 215-pound match in 3:43 to boost his match record to 26-5. Ochoa pinned his 285-pound opponent in 2:24.

The Green Wave then won seven matches in a row to control their own fate.

“We have a lot of young guys, but I saw a lot of improvement, too,” said Seahawks coach Trevor Elliott.

The Seahawks finished strong, winning three in a row.

Senior Bessik Beriashvili snapped the string of losses for the Seahawks by winning the 145-pound match over Gabe Santana in 3:23. The match pitted two of the best in the county at 145 pounds. The win makes Beriashvili 29-3 on the season.

Chris Rogers won the 152-pound match by forfeit and Jesse Whitt (26-5) pinned his 160-pound opponent in 2:43.

The Seahawks, 8-13 in dual meets, host the LCAC meet which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Nets.
