Bishop Verot continued its strong play Saturday, defeating host Key West 62-46 in high school basketball action.

Etienne Effenberg, a 6-foot-6 senior, led the Vikings with 22 points. Senior Brennan Melvin tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Vikings (15-6) were coming off an 81-52 win over Dunbar. They’ve won nine of their last 10 games overall.

Rugby

The Cape Blackhawks dropped their first match of the season Saturday, falling to the Naples Bears 22-12 at Palmetto Ridge. The Blackhawks (1-1) opened their season a week prior with a 50-0 win over Lely.

Against Naples, the Blackhawks were led by Austin Luby, Ryan Pigott and Tyler Aaland.

Luby led the charge in the victory over Lely. He scored on two “trys” and one conversion. Walter Gutierrez, Shawn Argoe, Nick Fernandez, Rohan Gilbert, Felix Solano and Aadland all contributing to the scoring.

The Blackhawks return to action Feb. 7 in St. Petersburg against the Pinellas Athletic Club.

Boys Soccer

Defending champion Mariner hosts this year’s District 5A-15 boys’ soccer tournament.

It begins Monday with No. 8 Lehigh hosting No. 9 East Lee County. The winner of that match faces top-seeded Fort Myers Tuesday.

The other quarterfinals matches on Tuesday include No. 5 Cape Coral at No. 4 Ida Baker, No. 6 Gulf Coast at No. 3 Mariner and No. 7 North Fort Myers at No. 2 Barron Collier.

The semifinals and championship match are Wednesday and Friday at Mariner.
