Prep Report: Mariner girls 3rd in LCAC
The Mariner Tritons locked up third place in Lee County Athletic Conference (LCAC) girls’ soccer Friday night with a 5-1 victory over Riverdale at Tony McKenna Field.
The win closes the book on the regular season schedule and sends the Tritons (12-6-1) into the District 5A-15 Tournament next week. They host North Fort Myers (10-10-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
Alyssa Barry delivered three goals for the Tritons while Tara Christie and Courtney Pruden each added one goal. Goalkeeper Brittany Steeb made seven saves.
Ida Baker 6, South Fort Myers 0: Ida Baker appears ready for next week’s District 5A-15 tournament after a dominating victory over South Fort Myers to lock up fifth place in the LCAC.
The Bulldogs, the No. 2 seed in the district, got strong performances from several players on senior night. Senior Isa Miranda scored one goal and added two assists, and fellow senior Lacey Sovern had one goal and one assist.
Junior Christine Giles continued her stellar offensive play with three goals, and freshman Payton Van Horn added one. Freshman Autumn Yesh contributed an assist.
The Bulldogs (14-4-3) host seventh-seeded Cape Coral at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a district quarterfinal match.
Cape Coral 8, Dunbar 0: Six seniors scores goals to carry Cape High to a shutout win over Dunbar.
Seniors Shelby Rowe, Rochelle Smith, Claire Lambert, Monica Avilla, Nina Antonacci and Marlee Henninge scored for the Seahawks, along with freshman Vickki Reno. Goalkeeper Amanda Copale made just one save to record the shutout.
The Seahawks (5-7-3) visit Ida Baker at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the District 5A-15 quarterfinal round.
North Fort Myers 8, East Lee County 0: Maria Fernandez connected for five goals in North Fort Myers’ shutout victory over East Lee County in the ninth-place game of the LCAC.
Courtney Allen, Allison Frost, Chelsea Wilton and Brianna Hawkins each added one goal while goalkeeper Brianna Abatisti had one save for the shutout.
The Red Knights (10-10-0) travel to Mariner for the District 5A-15 quarterfinals Wednesday.
Bishop Verot 3, Golden Gate 0: Bishop Verot closed out the season with a shutout victory over Golden Gate at Viking Stadium.
Mary Keezel scored twice and Kayley Clay had the other goal. Senior Jamie Cramer chipped in with an assist.
Verot (11-5-1) hosts Dunbar Tuesday in the District 3A-10 Tournament.
Boys Soccer
Mariner 8, Lehigh 0: Matt Lott and Colt Masters each had two goals to lead the Tritons to third place in the LCAC with a shutout of Lehigh.
Christian Corrales, Juan Toscano, Travis Edward and Tyler Korytkowski each added one goal. Keeper Renato Proia made five saves, all in the first half, to record the shutout.
Mariner (11-8-3) travels to Riverdale Wednesday.
Cape Coral 4, Riverdale 1: Zach Sheffield tallied two goals as Cape High nailed down fifth place in the LCAC with a victory over Riverdale
Kevin Lopera and Andrew Torres each scored once. Nick Gillogly had two assists, both on Sheffield goals, while Torres and Fabian Fajardo also had assists.
Cape used three goalkeepers – Santi Villamil, Nico Rubio and Rush Manterola – who combined for nine saves.
The Seahawks (7-7-4) go to Gateway Tuesday and host Gateway in a return match on senior night Wednesday.
Ida Baker 2, Estero 0: Carlos Zuniga and Harvey Rincon each scored a goal to lift Ida Baker to victory over Estero and lock down seventh place in the LCAC.
Daniel Sharkey assisted on one goal and keeper Jose Zuniga made six saves to post the shutout.
The Bulldogs (8-7-2) play at Cypress Lake at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
North Fort Myers 4, East Lee County 2: Scott Belbeck netted two goals to lead North Fort Myers to victory over East Lee County and 9th place in the LCAC.
Eric Agostinelli and Beau Reed also scored for the Red Knights, who got seven saves from goalkeeper Chris Hamilton.
North (6-10-1) hosts Charlotte Wednesday.
Boys Basketball
Fort Myers 73, Cape Coral 71: Matt Yance connected on a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter, tying the game, and the host Green Wave scored the final basket as the time expired in a wild victory over Cape High.
The Seahawks trailed by as many as seven in the fourth, but rallied to take a three-point lead with less than a minute to play.
The Seahawks had a chance to win it, but lost possession, and Evin Graham converted on the other end to give the Green Wave the win.
Senior Cameron Hall made all six free-throw attempts in the fourth, and finished with 17 points. Joel Hill also had 17 for the Seahawks. Yoko Roldan (16) and Josh Monteagudo (10) also ended in double figures.
Colin Henry had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Green Wave (10-6).
The Seahawks (11-5) play at Gulf Coast Wednesday.
