Prep Report: Tritons notch 5th straight win

The Mariner Tritons opened play in the Wakulla Shootout in Crawfordsville with a 75-64 victory over Wakulla Friday night.

The Tritons won their fifth straight game by racing to an early lead. They led 25-20 after one period and 42-33 at halftime and held on from there.

Ricardo Barsesa led the Tritons with 24 points, Kameron Beach added 18 and Clint Johnson chipped in with another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Mariner (6-7) collides with Franklin County at 10 a.m. Saturday and wraps up tournament play against Panama City Arnold at 5 p.m.

The Tritons return home to take on East Lee County Tuesday.

Bishop Verot 74, Golden Gate 41: Bishop Verot must have been happy to be home after a lengthy stint of road games as the hot-shooting Vikings mauled Golden Gate Friday night.

Five Vikings scored in double figures, led by Etienne Effenberg with 20 points. Brennan Melvin added 17 points and nine rebounds while Bobby Thomas added 12, Jacquard Hagan 11 and Jesse Kane 10.

The Vikings (9-5) connected regularly to open a 44-25 halftime cushion and pulled away down the stretch.

They hit the road again for the Martin Luther King Stop The Violence tournament in Miami where they open at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Coral Reef.

South Fort Myers 4, Ida Baker 0: Ida Baker broke its holiday layoff with a shutout loss to South Fort Myers in the opening game of the Southwest Florida Winter Invitational at Golden Gate.

“We were late getting there and didn’t have time to stretch or anything, so we were sluggish coming off the layoff,” said Bulldogs coach Mick Whitewood.

South Fort Myers got two goals in the first 10 minutes to set the tone and led at the half 3-0. The Wolfpack tacked on an insurance goal in the second half.

Baker goalkeeper Jose Zuniga was credited with 12 quality saves.

The Bulldogs (6-4-3) meet LaBelle (4-6-2) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the third-place game. Golden Gate (10-0), which likewise blanked LaBelle 4-0 Friday, collides with South Fort Myers at 7:30 Saturday in the championship game.
