Host Ida Baker and Mariner each stumbled Monday in opening-round games in the Ida Baker Holiday Tournament.

Mariner fell to Jupiter 78-30 and Baker lost to Reynoldsburg (Ohio) 64-13 in the final game of the night.

The Baker Bulldogs and Mariner Tritons play Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. on the second day of tournament action.

North Fort Myers and Estero also posted victories Monday.

Wally Rosario scored 22 points, leading North past Palmetto Ridge, 50-42. Estero pulled away from Lehigh, 41-28.

Reynoldsburg used 13 points from T’Shera Lucas in their win over Baker.

Mariner was led by Chastity Carter’s 18 points in the loss to Jupiter.

North meets Estero at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first semifinal and Jupiter plays Reynoldsburg at 7 p.m. in the second semifinal.

n American Heritage 65, Cape Coral 47: Cape Coral got off to a sluggish start against American Heritage in the Dunbar Invitational and didn’t get on track much after that. The result was an 18-point loss.

Alexiss Griffin scored 17 points to lead the Seahawks (10-5). Jardin McCarthy and Jomaris Vasquez each added 10.

The Seahawks battle Miami Pace Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

Boys Basketball

n Cape Coral 42, Glynn Academy, Ga. 41: Senior Kyle Bregenzer scored 12 points and sank a three-pointer with 10 seconds left, lifting Cape Coral to a one-point win in the Christmas in the Corner Classic. The tournament is being played in Charleston, S.C.

It was a tight game throughout and the Seahawks needed clutch performances from players like Bregenzer and sophomore Santo Figueroa, who contributed six points.

The Seahawks (9-1) advance to the semifinals. They play at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

n Bishop Verot 81, Archbishop Spalding 78: Brennan Melvin turned in a splendid all-around performance and Verot picked up a victory in the St. Pius Invitational in Atlanta.

Melvin had 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Jesse Kane had 18 points for the Vikings and Etienne Effenberg scored 19.

Verot opened tournament play with a 56-53 overtime loss to Cincinnati Roger Bacon. They face New Orleans Brother Martin Tuesday.

n Ida Baker 69, Miami Braddock 59: Baker claimed its second straight win in the Gulfshore Shootout at Golden Gate, knocking off a strong 6A team in Miami Braddock (9-3).

John Skinner had 23 points to lead the Bulldogs. Zach Campbell added 17 and Ron Ward 12. Xavier Battle had seven assists and played an outstanding defensive game against Braddock’s top offensive player.

Baker (8-4) continues tournament play with a semifinals game Tuesday.
