Prep Report: Seahawks unlock Gateway
The Cape Coral Seahawks got off to a fast start and made the most of it to defeat Gateway Charter 70-56 Friday night in the final round of the North of the River Tournament at Cape High.
North Fort Myers downed East Lee County 66-62 in the earlier game Friday night.
Joel Hill and Yoko Roldan combined for 35 points to lead the Seahawks, who sprinted to a 42-18 halftime advantage and still held a 55-42 edge heading into the final quarter. Cameron Hall finished with 10 assists.
The Seahawks (8-1) return to action Dec. 29-31 in a holiday tournament in Charleston, S.C.

Bishop Verot 60, Calvary Christian 33: Four players scored in double figures Friday to lead Bishop Verot to an easy victory over Clearwater Calvary Christian in the Tampa Berkeley Prep tournament.
Jacquard Hagan led the Vikings foursome with 14 points. Jesse Kane and Etienne Effenberg added 11 points apiece while Brennan Melvin had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Vikings (5-3) face Tampa Plant at 6 p.m. Saturday in the final round of tournament action.
Girls Basketball
Cape Coral 59, Cypress Lake 43: Jardin McCarthy pitched in 18 points, one of four Seahawks in double figures, to lead Cape to victory over Cypress Lake.
Alexiss Griffin added 12 points while Christine Gaywood and Stephanie De Los Santos each contributed 11 points.
Girls Soccer
Mariner 2, Cape Coral 0: An early goal proved to be the game-winner and cemented by a late goal as Mariner blanked Cape Coral.
Kelsea Whitaker got the Tritons’ first goal early in the first half while Alyssa Barry sealed the win with a goal late in the second half. Goalkeeper Brittany Steeb preserved the shutout with 10 saves.
The Tritons take a 9-4-1 mark into the holiday break. They are in action again Jan. 5 at Cypress Lake.
Boys Soccer
Barron Collier 1, North Fort Myers 0: Nick Vergara scored the game’s only goal in the first five minutes of play off a throw-in and Collier’s defense made it stand up for a victory over North Fort Myers.
North goalkeeper Chris Hamilton made 10 saves.
The game was a makeup of one postponed by wet grounds earlier this month. The Red Knights (4-9-1) are idle until Jan. 6 when they host Fort Myers.
