Prep Report: Cape escapes in 69-60 win
The first round of the North of the River Tournament at Cape Coral High featured an overtime thriller and a come-from-behind victory.
Cape High coach Mark Rinehart admitted the Seahawks did not play well, but somehow managed to escape with a 69-64 victory over North Fort Myers. East Lee County earned its first win of the season with a 74-72 overtime win over Gateway Charter in the opening game.
East Lee takes on North Fort Myers (1-7) at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by Gateway and Cape High.
James McIntyre, a sophomore, pitched in a game- and career-high 20 points to lead Cape’s comeback. The Seahawks trailed throughout the game until the two-minute mark.
With the score tied 60-60, McIntyre connected on one of his four three-pointers to put Cape in the lead for good.
Joel Hill chipped in 19 points and Cameron Hall added 10 for the Seahawks (7-1).
Michael Malaise led the Red Knights with 19 points while Tre Boston added 18 and Erwin Guerrero had 12.

Ridgewood 58, Bishop Verot 50: A seven-point, third-quarter lead evaporated and Bishop Verot was handed an eight-point defeat by Class 5A, No. 6-ranked New Port Richey Ridgewood (7-2) in the first round of the Tampa Berkeley Prep Invitational.
Brennan Melvin pitched in a team-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Verot. Etienne Effenberg added 13 points.
The Vikings (4-3) face Clearwater Calvary Christian at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Girls Soccer
Mariner 3, Fort Myers 1: Amanda Seny beat the keeper one-on-one in the second half to seal Mariner’s victory over Fort Myers.
Alyssa Barry’s goal put the Tritons up 1-0 at halftime and Emily DiRoma added the game-winning goal in the second half. Goalkeeper Brittany Steeb had a light night with three saves.
The Tritons (8-4-1) host Cape Coral Friday.
Ida Baker 1, Riverdale 1 (tie): Payton Van Horn scored off an assist from Autumn Yesh in the second half for Baker to force a tie at Riverdale.
Goalkeeper Natalia Ortiz recorded five saves for the Bulldogs (11-3-4), who are idle until Jan 5 against Evangelical Christian.
Boys Soccer
Fort Myers 4, Cape Coral 1: Four unanswered goals in the second half spelled defeat for the Cape High Seahawks at Fort Myers.
Fabian Fajardo converted a penalty kick in the final minute of the first half to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.
The Green Wave knocked in two goals off long throw-ins and two others on deflections inside the box.
Cape goalkeeper Santi Villamil had a busy night with 16 saves. The Seahawks (5-5-4) are idle until a Jan. 5 match with Ida Baker.
