Prep Report: Cape, Baker girls tie 1-1 in soccer
Ida Baker’s girls had plenty of scoring chances, but the Cape High defense held strong in front of senior goalkeeper Shelby Rowe as the city rivals battled to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night on the Bulldogs’ home turf.
Freshman Brittney Herrera put the Bulldogs on top at about the three-minute mark with a tap-in goal off a pass from Christine Giles, who redirected a corner kick across the mouth of the goal to Herrera on the far side.
The Seahawks tied the game 1-1 in the final minute before halftime on a goal by freshman Emily Daniels. The sequence started with a direct kick into a crowd in front of the net. Baker keeper Libby Schuls deflected the first shot, fell to the turf and Daniels had two more kicks at the ball in heavy traffic before finally squirting it into the net.
The Seahawks packed the defense tightly in the second half, and Rowe finished with 19 saves. By comparison, Schuls had four saves.
“It was good experience for our girls,” said Baker coach Dave Trepkowski. “We played everyone in the first half. The girls learned the game is not over until the final whistle and you have to play a full 80 minutes.”
The Bulldogs (11-3-3) picked up an unscheduled game Thursday night at Riverdale. The Seahawks (3-5-3) play at Mariner Friday night.
Cypress Lake 3, North Fort Myers 1: Despite a two-goal loss to Cypress Lake, the North High Red Knights draw a positive frame of mind from the outcome since they lost to the Panthers 6-1 in the first meeting.
North’s Mariah Fernandez’s second-half goal off an assist from Ashley La Pierre cut the Panthers’ halftime lead in half, but an insurance goal late provided the final margin.
Goalkeeper Brianna Abatisti made 10 saves for the Red Knights (7-8), who visit Evangelical Christian Thursday night.
