North Fort Myers senior Mariah Fernandez had a difficult time deciding which of her favorite sports to pursue in college. Ultimately, she wanted the opportunity to compete at the Division I level.

Fernandez made her decision last month signing a softball scholarship with nearby Florida Gulf Coast University.

“I was torn between the two (softball and soccer),” she said, “but I’m really happy I got a D-1 offer and I get to be close so (family and friends) can watch my games.”

Either sport would have made sense for the multi-sport standout, who also played volleyball for the first time this year.

Fernandez currently is in her fourth season with the soccer team. She uses her speed and athleticism to become an offensive force from her forward position.

The Daily Breeze Female Athlete of the Week scored three goals in the Red Knights’ 8-0 victory over Lehigh last week, giving her 11 in the first 10 games of the season.

Fernandez posted her 50th career goal Monday in a win over Cape.

“It’s all about the teamwork,” Fernandez explained. “I can’t do it without my teammates.”

Fernandez is one of 13 starters back this season. Despite the number of returning players, they were hit hard by injuries last season. That led to a disappointing 6-11-6 record.

The Red Knights (6-5) have been a more balanced team this season.

“We’re all healthy,” Fernandez said, “and we’re playing a lot more as a team because of that.”

Following the soccer season, Fernandez will shift her attention to softball. She has played both sports since she was 5 years old.

Along with playing softball in college, she plans to study and major in a health-related field.

Honorable mentions:

Brittany Steeb, senior, Mariner soccer: Steeb, a goalkeeper, made 13 saves in Mariner’s 3-2 win over Fort Myers last week, and posted 14 saves in a scoreless tie with Ida Baker.

Jardin McCarthy, senior, Cape Coral basketball: McCarthy sank five three-pointers and finished with 24 points in a 50-16 win over East Lee County last week.
