Prep Report: Cape boys drop North 4-1
Andrew Torres, Shane Pacheco and Fabian Fajardo scored first-half goals to boost the Cape Coral Seahawks to a 4-1 victory Monday night at North Fort Myers.
Torres put the Seahawks on the board first, scoring on an assist from Guillermo Duque, and Fajardo set up Pacheco’s goal. Fajardo scored on a penalty kick, stretching the lead to 3-0.
The teams traded goals in the second half. Beau Reed scored for North, while Paola Acosta scored the final goal for Cape on an assist from Duque.
Cape freshman goalkeeper Santi Villamil made 11 saves.
The Seahawks (5-4-2) host Fort Myers Friday at Dave Warkentin Stadium.
Cypress Lake 1, Mariner 0: Cypress Lake scored the lone goal with five minutes remaining in the first half, handing the host Tritons a 1-0 loss.
Tritons coach Martin Cardenas remains one victory shy of 200 career varsity wins at Mariner.
Mariner senior goalkeeper Renato Proia did not play because he was attending a banquet for the John Carrigan Rotary South All-Star Football Classic. His replacement, junior Matt Brust, registered five saves.
The Panthers got on the board late in the first half. They scored on a scramble in front of the net after a throw-in.
The Tritons only mustered a few quality scoring chances.
“(Cypress Lake) was closer to their second goal than we were to our first goal,” Cardenas said.
Mariner (4-5-2) returns to action Tuesday in a district game at Barron Collier.
Girls Soccer
Cypress Lake 2, Mariner 1: Mariner senior Brooke Albert scored in the second half, but visiting Cypress Lake claimed the victory.
After a scoreless first half, Cypress grabbed a 1-0 lead. Albert tied it, scoring on an assist from Alyssa Barry.
The Panthers took the lead for good with 10 minutes left.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Steeb had 10 saves.
The Tritons (6-3-1) host Barron Collier Tuesday.
North 2, Cape Coral 0: North Fort Myers senior Mariah Fernandez recorded her 50th career goal in a victory over host Cape Coral.
The Red Knights took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Courtney Allen and added to the lead when Fernandez scored on an assist from Rachel Perkins.
Brianni Abatisti made 10 saves for the Red Knights (6-5).
The Red Knights play at Baker Tuesday. Cape Coral travels to Fort Myers Thursday.
Girls Basketball
Cypress 55, Mariner 19: Mariner senior Chastity Carter scored 10 points, but host Cypress Lake pulled away from the outset.
Mariner freshman Safiya Gibbs led with four rebounds.
The Tritons (0-7) host Barron Collier Tuesday and travel to Ida Baker Friday.
