Prep Report: Baker girls post fourth straight soccer road win

Three unanswered goals in the second half earned the Ida Baker girls their fourth straight road victory, a 3-1 triumph at district rival Gulf Coast Tuesday night.

The Sharks led 1-0 early in the second half when Christine Giles scored the first of two unassisted goals to put the Bulldogs in the lead. Giles tacked on an insurance goal with about a minute remaining off an assist from Alli Hare.

Goalkeeper Libby Schuls was credited with 14 saves to boost the Bulldogs to 7-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 against District 5A-15 rivals.

Baker plays their first home game in two weeks Thursday night when they host Cypress Lake.

Barron Collier 4, Cape Coral 1: Cape High goalkeeper Shelby Rowe wound up making 15 saves, but the Seahawks lost to Barron Collier.

Emily Daniels scored the Seahawks’ lone goal in the second half off an assist from Carrie McDonald.

The Seahawks (2-4-2) travel to East Lee County Thursday.

Mariner 3, Fort Myers 2: Amanda Seny scored two goals and Alyssa Barry added another, all in the first half, as Mariner edged Fort Myers.

Tritons goalkeeper Brittany Steeb made 13 saves. Emily Diroma had one assist and Barry had two.

Mariner (6-2) hosts Ida Baker Friday night.

Bishop Verot 8, Dunbar 0: Melissa Peterson and Lauren Cento scored two goals apiece and neither of two goalkeepers faced a shot on goal in Bishop Verot’s win over Dunbar.

Talia Barraco, Kiran Sharma, Angie Colon and Stephanie Zavada each added one goal for the Vikings, who also got single assists from Staci Lehnert, Kady Otzko and Sharma. Amber Law and Chryssie Gibson combined for the keeper shutout.

Verot (3-2-1) visits Fort Myers Thursday night.

North 8, Lehigh 0: Senior Mariah Fernandez scored three goals and sophomore Brianna Hawkins added two, leading the host Red Knights to a rout of Lehigh.

Tina Agostinelli and Allison Frost each had one goal. Courtney Allen had two assists and Ashley LaPierre had one assist.

The Red Knights (5-5) play at Cape Coral Monday.

Boys Soccer

Ida Baker 1, Gulf Coast 0: Joe Johnson scored the game’s only goal in the 35th minute of the first half and goalkeeper Jose Zuniga made it hold up with eight saves and lift Ida Baker to a District 5A-15 win at Gulf Coast.

The shutout is the third of the season for Zuniga in goal. Brandon Stevens made the assist on the goal with a crisp crossing pass that Johnson converted from eight yards out.

The Bulldogs (4-2, 3-1 district) host Fort Myers Friday night.

Barron Collier 1, Cape Coral 0: Barron Collier broke a scoreless tie with about eight minutes remaining in the Cougars’ District 5A-15 victory over Cape Coral.

The Seahawks (3-4-2, 2-1-1 district)o host East Lee County Thursday.

Fort Myers 0, Mariner 0: In an almost-as-good-as-a-victory performance, the Tritons settled for a scoreless tie with Fort Myers.

Goalkeeper Renato Proia was credited with six saves while defenders Matt Isherwood and John Teeter turned in outstanding efforts.

The Tritons (3-4-2, 1-0-2 district) host Lehigh Friday night.

North Fort Myers 2, Lehigh 1: Scott Belbeck’s goal with 10 seconds remaining broke a 1-1 tie to lift North Fort Myers to victory over Lehigh.

Dillon Wittwer put the Red Knights in front with a first-half goal. Casey Perkowski set up the game-winning goal with a perfect throw-in that Belbeck drilled from inside the 18-yard box. Chris Hamilton made nine saves in the net for North (3-6, 2-3 district), which hosts Cape Coral next Monday.

Boys Basketball

Ida Baker 62, Gulf Coast 60: Ida Baker seized control early on with a 16-point first-half lead, never trailed and hit key free throws (6-of-7) down the stretch to hold off Gulf Coast.

John Skinner and Zach Campbell led the Bulldogs with double-doubles. Skinner hit for a game-high 21 points and Campbell added 15 while both grabbed 10 rebounds. Gabe Rodriguez and Zavier Battle added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs (3-1, 1-0 district) visit Cypress Lake Thursday night.

Cape Coral 72, Barron Collier 58: Cape Coral made 14 first-half turnovers and seemed intimidated in a District 5A-15 game at Barron Collier.

Junior Joel Hill (28 points) and senior point guard Cameron Hall (16 points) spearheaded the strong second half, which saw the Seahawks outscore the Cougars, 46-21.

Hill had 19 of his points in the second half. The Seahawks (3-0, 1-0) face East Lee County Thursday and host Mariner Saturday.

Barron Collier 46, Cape Coral 37: The Seahawks battled defending district and state champion Barron Collier until late in the fourth quarter but were unable to overcome the loss of senior point guard Jardin McCarthy, who fouled out with 2:44 remaining.

The Seahawks (4-3) play at East Lee County Thursday.
