Prep Report: Tritons dealt 2-1 setback
Immokalee only mustered four scoring chances, but converted two of them to hand Mariner a 2-1 setback Monday night at Tony McKenna Field.
The Indians took the lead in the first half when they got behind the Tritons defense for a close-in shot.
“Our defense stepped up, but the ball got behind them for a one-on-one chance on the keeper,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas. “The same thing happened in the second half. Immokalee finished the plays very well.”
The Tritons cut the final margin in half with less than four minutes remaining. Matt Lott fired a shot that caromed off the Indians’ keeper and Juan Rincon tapped it home for the goal. Goalkeeper Renato Proia made two saves.
The Tritons (3-4-1) host Fort Myers in a District 5A-15 contest Tuesday night.
“We’ll have to play tougher and smarter against Fort Myers because this one counts for the district seedings,” said Cardenas.
Estero 5, North Fort Myers 2: Jonatan Orellana and Scott Belbeck accounted for North High’s two first-half goals, but a 2-1 advantage disappeared as Estero scored four unanswered goals in the second half to beat the Red Knights.
Orellana scored the initial goal three minutes into the game off an assist from Belbeck, who scored on a 20-yard free kick for the halftime lead. Goalkeeper Chris Hamilton made seven saves.
North (2-6) travels to Lehigh Tuesday.
