Prep Report: Baker pulls away from ECS, 84-44
For the second straight game, Ida Baker played tenacious defense, forcing 36 turnovers, and defeated Evangelical Christian 84-44 Friday night in the Ida Baker Turkey Shootout.
The host Bulldogs (2-0) opened their high school basketball season Tuesday with a lopsided 76-38 win over Cypress Lake.
Against ECS, seniors Zach Campbell (24 points, 10 rebounds) and John Skinner (16 points, 13 rebounds) each had double-doubles. Senior Xavier Battle tallied six assists and senior Gabe Rodriguez had eight of the Bulldogs’ 25 steals.
The Bulldogs play Boca Ciega in the Turkey Shootout championship Saturday at 7:45 p.m. Boca Ciega defeated Palmetto Ridge 79-74.
n Cape Coral 68, Lemon Bay 54: It was a streaky opening game for the Cape Coral Seahawks, but when they needed a clutch basket junior Joel Hill delivered time and time again.
The 6-foot-2 Hill scored a game-high 26 points and the Seahawks knocked off host Lemon Bay in its Thanksgiving Shootout.
“He’s developing into that guy,” Seahawks coach Mark Rinehart said of Hill. “When we needed a basket he would get it.”
Sophomore Justin Mitchell added 11 for the Seahawks. They led 35-26 at halftime and then outscored the Manta Rays 19-4 in the third quarter.
The Seahawks (1-0) face Port Charlotte Saturday at 2 p.m.
n North Port 63, Mariner 42: Trailing by only six entering the fourth quarter, the Mariner Tritons couldn’t keep up with North Port in the Lemon Bay Shootout.
North Port outscored the Tritons 26-11 in the fourth. Shawn Noriega led with a game-high 21 points.
Ricardo Barsesa hit two three-pointers and finished with 13 to lead the Tritons (1-1).
The Tritons play Lemon Bay Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Girls Basketball
n Gulf Coast 57, Bishop Verot 30: Allie Mitchell led with 10 points but Bishop Verot fell to Gulf Coast on the first day of the Community School of Naples Thanksgiving Shootout.
Elizabeth Norton added nine points.
The Vikings (3-2) face Cape Coral at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Cape (4-1) fell to Community School 45-35.
