Even though the Mariner Tritons were eliminated from the postseason, they wanted to end their season on a high note, and they did.

The Tritons scored early and often Friday night en route to a 48-0 victory over the winless LaBelle Cowboys at Tony McKenna Field.

Mariner running back Mario Perone started the scoring with a 32-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that was set up by an interception by the Tritons’ defense.

The Tritons (4-6) scored again three minutes later on a two-yard run by Perone, putting them up 12-0 midway through the first quarter. Renato Proia’s PAT failed on a bad snap after the first touchdown and a two-point conversion failed after the second.

LaBelle (0-10) had no answer for the Tritons’ rushing attack as Perone scored a third time in the opening period on a big run of 34 yards, putting the Tritons ahead 19-0 after Proia’s kick.

The scoring did not stop there. Jesse Crilly scored on an eight-yard run in the second quarter to put the game out of reach, 26-0.

After the Cowboys’ third turnover of the game, Mariner had a short field to work with and used their ground attack again to punch in another touchdown, a one-yard plunge by Crilly, making it 33-0.

Before the half, the Tritons’ defense got in the act by sacking the Cowboys’ quarterback for a safety. Mariner led 35-0 at the half, and the second half was more of the same.

Eric Mitchell, playing quarterback for injured starter Gabrielle Rojas, showed his running back skills with a 42-yard touchdown run to give the Tritons a 42-0 lead in the third quarter.

The Triton defense would not budge as they held during the fourth quarter. After the Tritons’ seventh touchdown run of the night the game was over 48-0.

Mariner’s defense and offense were both playing at a high level while LaBelle had no answers on either side of the ball.

Perone finished with three touchdowns and went over 100 yards rushing in the season finale.

Mariner wanted to end their season with a win, and not only did they do that, but they did it in style.
