3 min read

Ida Baker’s cross country team will be well represented at “the Ranch.”

The Bulldogs turned in a strong showing at Friday’s Region 3A-3 boys’ meet at Estero Community Park where teams and individuals qualified for next Friday’s FHSAA Finals to be run at the Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City.

Junior Amanda Kane qualified individually for the first time. She finished 15th overall with a time of 21:50.17. She’s the only girl from any Cape school to qualify for state.

“This is her third year and she’s been working really hard,” Bulldogs coach Janet Davis said. “She is just extremely motivated.”

In the boys’ race, Baker finished second in the team standings with 88 points. Jessie Betts was the Bulldogs’ top performer, placing 15th, followed by Cory Hinkle (18th), Allen Chandler (20th), Zachery Stackhouse (21st), Dustin Grego (35th) and Ronaldo Nall (41st).

The top six teams and top 15 individuals earned state berths.

North Fort Myers also qualified runners for the state meet. Zach Kovacik placed fifth in 17:37.02. Wally Rosario was eighth and Chelsea Humbert-Llinas placed 12th in the girls’ race, leading the Red Knights to fifth place in the team standings.

Fort Myers’ Katie Russo and Cypress Lake’s Trent Craig captured the regional titles.

Region 2A-3: Bishop Verot sophomore Jeremy Ploplis and senior Sean Quinn placed eighth and 10th, respectively, leading the Vikings to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.

In all, the Vikings had five runners in the boys’ top 47. Junior Kevin Jordan was 25th, senior Shawn Scanlan 43rd and junior Kevin Parza was 47th.

Fort Myers 4, Cape Coral 0: Cape High goalkeeper Shelby Rowe made 17 saves, but it was the four shots that got through that lead to the Seahawks’ loss to Fort Myers Friday night at Dave Warkentin Stadium.

The loss evens out the Seahawks’ record to 1-1-1 heading into Monday’s visit to Cypress Lake.
