Gulf boys win county hoops title
Gulf Middle School topped off an undefeated season with a 51-34 victory over Dunbar Middle School Wednesday in the Lee County boys’ basketball championship game at Challenger Middle School.
Gulf’s Rick Moore scored the game’s first basket and the Dolphins never trailed. They opened a 10-5 lead by the end of the first quarter and pulled away by outscoring Dunbar 17-11 in the second period for a 27-16 halftime advantage.
David Flynn scored 11 of his career-high 29 points in the second-quarter blitz.
Flynn hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half to open a 35-20 cushion.
After the Dolphins (7-0) built a 48-25 bulge to start the fourth quarter, Dunbar launched a last-ditch rally, outscoring the Dolphins 9-3 to close the final margin to 17 points.
Flynn had eight rebounds to go with his game-high point total. Moore added eight points and eight rebounds. Sean Brady contributed four points, Chase Galuzny three points, with Billy Carmelia, Jon Ramirez and Julius White each adding two points. Carter Sammons had one point.
